AF1 One of the things we really wanted to do was bring home the idea that these people couldn't leave. We decided to have no blackouts and use the transition light that you see here. It consisted of two template washes layered on top of one another. All the scene and costume changes took place in this look. Here we also see one of Anne's entries in her diary.
AF2 In this scene we get a good view of the set. I designed the set and lights in a way that the audience felt as if they were looking at a cutaway of the building. The walls were cutaway revealing the structural members; the doors were just swinging frames. I lit the show so that each of the rooms had its own feel. I felt that one of the subthemes was the need for personal space. We saw this in the strained relationship between Anne and Mr. Dussel as they were forced to share a cramped living space (DSR).
AF4 Everyone is gathered in the main room.
